District Governor Visits Home Club

HUDSON, WISCONSIN - August 17, 2011
Small New District Governor Judy Freund gave today’s presentation. She said she was very excited to be back at her own club. Judy mentioned Rotary events coming up on September 17 at Camp St. Croix, The Foundation Celebration on November 5 at the Prom Center and The District Conference April 13-14 in River Falls.

At Judy’s installation, she brought out what she calls her, 'community box.' It is filled with things that remind her of what makes up our community of Hudson. It is also a reminder of what it takes to start working in our community.

Judy addressed the fact that not everyone knows what a District Governor really does. Judy brings her expertise as a teacher to her role. Teachers see the future, so her focus this year is to make every Rotarian into “Becoming a Big Letter Rotarian.”

Becoming is a word that means a journey.  What would you put in your box to contribute?  Many words were offered up including:  service, philanthropy, youth, community, car raffle, fun, support, friends, legacy, global and activities. Judy said that as she has been traveling to all the clubs in our district two words keep coming up, “Service and fellowship!”  Other words that don’t come up and should are: leadership, diversity and ethics. We need to be thinking local to global.

What is it about service that makes such a difference in people’s lives? Experiencing different cultures around the world affects us in ways that affects us for the rest of our lives. It gives us a perspective like no other.

Judy told us about a foreign exchange student many years ago that had the opportunity to visit Moscow. While in Moscow she kept a journal. When she first arrived all she wanted to do was come back home. Everything was bad. However in her last entry into the journal, she still wanted to come home, but she also expressed how she had grown to love the people she stayed with and would miss them. She felt very blessed and fortunate. She got a new light cast on life. Judy shared another story of a woman that went to Pakistan that came home with that life changing experience.

Judy’s goal as this year’s District Governor is to make every Rotarian become a part of the Rotary Foundation. No matter what you can give, it will be certain to change lives.

Dave Robson then presented Judy with her new Paul Harris award PLUS 8.  Annette Cook presented Judy with a couple more things for her box, including Green Bay Packer stickers and a small cheese head. Pat Casanova then presented Judy with a gift from Daybreak Rotary for our appreciation as serving as this year’s District Governor.
